OLDER YOUTH SYEP

Setting the Stage

To begin, spend some time reviewing the information below. This will ensure you know what to expect and how to get started!

FIRST THINGS FIRST

When you start a new position, you begin with an orientation.

Your first week is all about getting to know your schedule, getting acquainted with your host site, meeting your team and getting familiar with expectations.

As you get oriented, remember to check-in with your host site for your schedule and start building your Profile on the Hats and Ladders App.

Why Project Based Learning? Check out the video below to learn more about your SYEP Bridge Summer 2020 experience!

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THIS EXPERIENCE

This summer is about you steering your own learning! You'll have support along the way, including the following:

  • Host Site: Your SYEP agency host site will guide your summer experience. Through your host site you will participate in facilitated or synchronous activities (activities that happen at the same time) through video conferencing. Be sure to check-in with your host site to learn how and when you will meet virtually.
  • A Design Team: These are the other young people within your SYEP program. You will work together to complete a project or Workplace Challenge.
  • The The SYEP Summer Bridge Website (this Website): This is the online location where you will complete self-guided learning. Remember to check in with your summer host site to know what sessions you should complete each week.
  • Hats and Ladders: A game-based app designed to help you identify your interest and strengths, explore what type of work best suits you, and discover possible career paths.
  • Workplace Challenge: This is the project you will work on with your Design Team. Check out the Older Youth Workplace Challenge page to learn more.

HOW TO USE THIS SITE

This website includes 15 self-guided Sessions (activities you complete independently) that will allow you to deepen the career exploration you have started in the Hats and Ladders App and will support your design of a community action project.
Using the site you will complete the following:

  • Portfolio Steps: At the end of every Session (Session 1-15), these are tasks you will complete related to what you’ve learned and created.
    1. Each Session has three steps to complete. Remember, this is how your agency will know what you have accomplished on your path to completing the experience and earning your money!
    2. In each Portfolio Step, you will have a choice of activities. You can choose based on how you like to work and what is easiest for you. If you are tired of looking at a screen, or tech access is sometimes unpredictable, there are options that don’t require Wifi or internet access.
  • Portfolio Workbook: A PDF copy of the Workbook can be found by clicking on the menu bar at the top of the site entitled "Participant Workbook." You can also request a copy from your host site. The Workbook will support completion of each Portfolio Step, so be sure to keep it available while doing your work.
Be sure to check-in with your host site to learn more about how to complete and submit your Portfolio work each week.

Read through the PDF to learn how to use the Website and complete your Portfolio Steps!
