Networking is all about making the time to keep in touch with people you know, and making the effort to meet people that can help you create opportunities now or in the future. Networking involves people talking to one another, sharing ideas, information and resources

Today,you will:

  • Understand the role of networking in building your future
  • Reflect on how to connect your career interests to your networking skills
  • Practice your informational interviewing skills


Portofolio Workbook Steps: Each step should take 1 hour.

STEP 1

First, read the article Two of the most important skills. You will learn that listening and asking questions are two of the most important skills for networking effectively. Let’s practice working on your skills.

  • Talk to friends, team or school mates, family, teachers, friends of parents and others you know.
  • Share with them some elements of your Dream Catcher from Session 1.
  • After your interview, debrief your experience, and answer the reflection questions in your Workbook.

STEP 2

Did you know that most people actually learn about job openings, scholarships and post secondary opportunities through friends, relatives, or others who are part of their personal network? Each person in your network has a network of his or her own, so your potential contacts can grow exponentially!
Use Your Workbook to complete the steps below.

Journaling Activity: Think about the Hats and Ladders work you have been doing:

  • What do you agree with in your Hats and Ladders work? What surprised you?
  • What is a possible career interest you have?
  • What can you do to develop your networking skills to get more information about this career?

STEP 3

Informational interviewing is a networking activity that can support your career exploration process.

An informational interview is a meeting to learn about the real-life experience of someone working in a field or company that interests you.

  • Identify someone within your network, whose job you would like to know more about. Contact them and request to have an informational interview. Here are some suggested questions.
  • In your Workbook, determine what questions you want to ask.
  • Conduct the interview and complete the note catcher in your Workbook.

TIP: Follow-up the interview with a thank you note. Include the specific information that you found to be interesting or helpful, and express appreciation for their time and willingness to support you. When you're ready to move to Session 6, click below!
