Y15 SESSION 7

Icebreaker: Track Your Energy. Some activities are energizing, while others can be draining. Use this app to start logging your activities for a few weeks and note how energized each activity makes you feel!

TODAY'S MISSION

In Session 6 you spent time discovering postsecondary options, or opportunities after high school or getting your GED. Today, you will continue to design your future by exploring how to use Design Thinking strategies to help you define your project goals and support your future goals. You’ll also learn more about the concept of failing up, or what is referred to as a Growth Mindset.

Don’t forget that this is YOUR future so you should make the most of imagining these options.

DESIGNING YOUR FUTURE

GOALS

Today,you will:

  • Understand how to apply Design Thinking to your project and future goals
  • Explore Growth Mindset
  • Build your professional brand

Portofolio Workbook Steps: Each step should take 1 hour.

PORTFOLIO STEP 1

Defining the problem is the most important part of problem solving. Sometimes what you think is the cause of the problem may actually only be the consequence or symptom of the problem. The Root Cause Tree (adapted from Advocate for Youth) is a tool to explore a problem and unearth underlying causes.

Watch this quick video to understand more.

Now, complete the Root Cause Tree in your Workbook to help define your project challenge.

When you’re done, complete the reflection questions in your Workbook. How might you use this process to design your future?

Share your work with your design team to support your project!

PORTFOLIO STEP 2

Next, you are going to learn more about the concept of failing up. Jay Z said, “You learn more in failure than you ever do in success.” Failing up is all about taking risks, being willing to fail, and recognizing that even if you don’t succeed you will learn from the experience. This is what PBL and Design Thinking are all about - testing solutions and learning from what doesn’t work.

Check out this video to hear more about failure being an important part of life.

While you're doing this, use your Workbook to write, OR record a 2-minute video about a time that you tried something and it didn’t work out the way you planned.

Consider

  • What was the experience?
  • What did you learn from it?
  • How did this experience impact your future decisions?
  • How might you apply what you learned to your project?

PORTFOLIO STEP 3

For this last Portfolio Step today, you are celebrating all you have learned about yourself and your possible options. You will create a business card that is like your personal brand to share with the wider world. Use your Workbook or Canva to check out options for design.

While you’re doing this, consider your style:

  • What are your favorite colors?
  • What are your key words?
  • What is the impression you want to leave when someone looks at your card?
