The New York City Department of Transportation and the MTA are working together to improve the city's bus system by implementing bus rapid transit improvements on routes throughout the city. DOT’s Bus Forward program now includes the Better Buses Action Plan – a policy to improve bus speeds by 25% and reverse the decline of bus ridership citywide. This program brings elements of Select Bus Service, New York City’s version of bus rapid transit, to bus routes throughout the city. Bus rapid transit is a cost-effective approach to transit service that cities around the world have used to make riding the bus more like riding the subway. In New York City, Select Bus Service incorporates features of bus rapid transit such as dedicated bus lanes, off-board fare collection, and transit signal priority to offer faster and more reliable service on high-ridership bus routes.
