DEP
Honors Winners of Water Conservation Art and Poetry Contest
New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner
Christopher O. Ward will host the ceremonies today as the DEP honors the
winners of its 17th Annual Water Conservation Art & Poetry Contest.
The ceremony recognizes 5th and 6th grade students whose artwork and poems
exhibit a superior understanding and appreciation of our water resources.
The ceremony will be from 1:30 to 3:00 P.M. at The Great Hall at Cooper
Union on East 7th Street in Manhattan. About 900 students, parent, teachers,
administrators and invited guests will attend, and winning entries will
be displayed.
Every year, the DEP asks 5th and 6th grade students from more than 1,000
public, private and parochial schools throughout the City to submit original
works of art and poetry that address themes related to the City water
system, water conservation, water quality and wastewater treatment. Entries
are judged on their originality, craftsmanship and creativity. Winners
from each borough in both the art and the poetry categories receive prizes.
