Commissioner Christopher O. Ward to Give Keynote Address on Water Conservation
at Westchester “Save Water/Safe Water” Conference
Commissioner Christopher O. Ward of the New York City Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP) will be the keynote speaker at a conference in Westchester
that will focus on water conservation and new technologies that allow
cities to make better use of their limited water resources.
The all-day “Save Water/Safe Water” conference, sponsored
by The Water-Wise Council of New York, Inc., will take place on March
24 at the Westchester County Center, 198 Central Avenue, White Plains,
from 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Co-sponsors include the DEP and numerous other
groups with interests in water conservation.
Commissioner Ward’s lunchtime address will cover topics that are
essential to New York City’s long-term water supply needs, from
the potential use of recycled water in the five boroughs for irrigation
to new generation water-conserving appliances to potential future water
supplies for New York City and its neighboring communities. Other topics
to be discussed at the conference include green roofs, stormwater pollution
prevention, organic lawns, residential water-use efficiency, watershed
forestry management, best management practices for landscaping and ground
water protection.
Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano will make the welcoming address
and the featured speaker will be Amy Vickers, author of “Water Use
and Conservation.” Other speakers will appear from Audubon International,
the Orange County Water Authority, Ashokan Water Services, the Council
on the Environment, Urban Forest Management and other related groups.
Exhibits on water conservation will also be on display. People wishing
to attend the “Save Water/Safe Water” conference should contact
Nancy Levine of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection
at (914) 742-2086.
