New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC) Sponsor Workshops Introducing High Volume Low Pressure Paint Spray Guns

As part of an initiative to introduce Bronx businesses to forward looking environmental and energy practices, DEP and BOEDC are providing incentives to Bronx auto body shops to purchase “High Volume Low Pressure” (HVLP) spray guns. The project is funded in part by the Bronx Initiative for Energy and the Environment and the Bronx Borough President.

Spray guns can contribute pollutants in the form of volatile organic compounds (VOC) as well as particulate emissions. The HVLP spray guns use approximately 25% less paint and emit close to 50% less particulates than conventional spray guns. Using less paint per car reduces costs for Bronx businesses. The program fully reimburses costs for HVLP spray guns purchased by eligible auto body shops when older and obsolete spray guns are turned in. HVLP or equivalent technology will be mandatory in the operations of all New York State auto body shops starting in January 2005.

The program is administered by DEP’s Environmental Economic Development Assistance Unit (EEDAU). EEADAU is committed to fostering the joint goals of economic development and environmental protection.

A workshop was held on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 and covered demonstration of HVLP procedures. It was presented by Tri-Star Sales, Inc. for Dan-Am Company and SATA Spray Equipment.

A second workshop will be held today, Monday, June 14, 2004 at 7 pm. DeVilbiss Automotive Refinishing will make the presentation at Bruckner Bx Collision Experts at 517 Bruckner Blvd., Bronx, New York.

Businesses that wish to participate in the program or to obtain further information, please call the EEADU office of DEP at 718 595 4541.
