Route
28A in West Shokan to Be Closed For Up To Two Days to Repair
Flood Damage
Commissioner Emily Lloyd of the New York City Department of Environmental
Protection announced today that on Wednesday, April 20 at 9:00
AM, NYC Route 28A in West Shokan will be closed to make crucial
repairs caused by flood damage. The Road will be closed in both
directions and the work is expected to last until Thursday at 5:00
PM.
“A concrete box culvert that runs under the road was severely
damaged during the storm of April 3-4 and must be replaced immediately,” said
Commissioner Lloyd. “This is absolutely necessary to make
the road safe again. DEP is coordinating with the Ulster County
Department of Public Works to make the repairs as quickly as possible.
Traffic from Watson Hollow Road (County Route 42) will detour
to the east to Reservoir Road, over the dividing weir to NYS Route
28 to Boiceville and back to NYC Route 28A. Traffic west of the
repair area will detour on NYC Route 28A to Boiceville, then to
NYS Route 28 to Reservoir Road over the dividing weir and back
to NYC Route 28A. DEP Police will be in the area to assist with
traffic control.
Temporary heavy timber shoring and the placement of steel construction
plates over the culvert have allowed both lanes of the road to
remain open. The culvert is nine feet below the surface and allows
water to pass under NYC Route 28A without disturbing traffic.
