DEP and Trout Unlimited’s “Trout in the Classroom” Program for New York City Students Release Trout Grown in Classrooms into Bronx River

DEP in partnership with Trout Unlimited’s Trout in the Classroom program, a water-quality environmental education initiative for elementary through high school students, will hold a trout release event for the first time in the Bronx River.

DATE: Tuesday, May 3, 2005
TIME: 10:00 am – 12 pm
PLACE: the Bronx River at 219 th Street,
Shoelace Park canoe dock.
PARTICIPANTS: Students from:
Bronx Expeditionary High School
Evander Childs High School (the Bronx).

BACKGROUND : The purpose of the Trout in the Classroom program is to create partnerships between New York City and upstate watershed schools as they raise trout from eggs, observe and study them in the classroom, and release them into New York State approved streams.

These activities help students develop a conservation awareness and encourages them to develop an understanding of our shared water resources. Students from the schools work together to release the trout they have raised and cared for during the school year and, use biological and chemical measurements to study water quality at the release sites.

The Trout in the Classroom program is sponsored by Trout Unlimited with support from DEP, Headwaters Initiative, the Bronx River Alliance of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Additional support comes from the Bay & Paul Foundations, the Catskill Watershed Corporation, Consolidated Edison, the Dorr Foundation, the Hudson River Foundation, the Norcross Wildlife Foundation and Theodore Gordon Flyfishers.

For further information about the Trout in the Classroom program, contact Matthew Rota, Trout Unlimited’s Trout in the Classroom Coordinator at (718) 595-3503.
