DEP Commissioner Emily Lloyd Welcomes Students to Living Harbor Wet Lab Aboard Schooner Peking at South Street Seaport Museum

Students set sail aboard schooner Pioneer in New York Harbor to test skills

Tuesday, April 25th

  • 10:30 am. Wet Lab presentation, Schooner Peking
  • 12:30 – 2 pm. Sail on Schooner Pioneer

Living Harbor Wet Lab Classroom, on board the
Schooner Peking at South Street Seaport, Pier 16,
South end of Fulton Street, on the East River.

Commissioner Emily Lloyd will greet a group of approximately 30 ninth grade students from the High School for Environmental Studies and their teachers at a presentation by South Street Museum’s educators at the Museum’s Living Harbor Wet Lab Classroom.  The students have been studying the New York City water supply system in their “Introduction to the Environment” class. The visit to the Living Harbor Wet Lab will focus on educating the students about New York Harbor and its marine life. The Wet Lab is located on board the Schooner Peking docked at Pier 16, of South Street Seaport.

The Wet Lab visit will be followed by lunch and a 90 minute sail aboard the Seaport’s Museum’s 1885 sailing Schooner Pioneer.   The vessel, which was refurbished by the South Street Seaport Museum, is dedicated to recreating 19th century sailing.  Students will help raise the sails, test harbor water, examine harbor ecosystems and practice knot tying and chart reading.

This is the first of a series of hands on water supply and harbor water education initiatives scheduled to take place with the cooperation of the South Street Seaport Museum and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection as well as the Catskill Watershed Corporation and upstate watershed school groups.

Reporters are welcome to board the Peking and observe the Wet Lab class presentation.
