260 Extra Doe Tags Offered At Eight DEP Hunting Areas

Commissioner Emily Lloyd of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced today that 260 extra doe tags will be offered this year at eight DEP hunting areas.  The extra tags have been obtained by the DEP through the State’s Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) to help improve forest regeneration.

“Our foresters have observed considerable deer browsing in many areas, and seedlings have been depleted,” said Commissioner Lloyd.  “By reducing the doe population we can reduce the overall deer population and maintain a healthy forest with the overall goal of protecting water quality.”

DEP will select eligible hunters to receive the doe tags through a lottery drawing on September 13, 2006.  Hunters who completed and returned a 2005 Deer Hunt Survey, who have a DEP 2006 Hunt Tag and who plan to hunt in any of the nine designated areas can qualify to receive a DMAP doe tag.  One doe tag will be issued per hunter unless extras are left over.

Eligible hunters should submit their entry for the lottery drawing by mail to DEP offices at 71 Smith Ave, Kingston, NY 12401.  They can also email their entry request to DEP Land Management at recreation@dep.nyc.gov.  Entries must be received by September 13.   Entries should include the hunter’s name, Access Permit number, mailing address and the name of the hunting area for which they are requesting a doe tag.  Priority will be given to those who have hunted in these areas previously according to surveys.  Doe tags and information will be mailed directly to the selected hunters in late September.

Doe Tags may only be used to harvest does and in the area in the table below for which it was issued.  The eight areas are listed on the following page.  Hunters can email or call DEP Land Management at (800) 575-LAND for more information.  Additional information about this and all DEP recreation programs is also available on the Web at www.nyc.gov/watershedrecreation.
