Update Advisory

Department of Environmental Protection Provides Update on Repairs and Monitoring at Cannonsville Dam

WHAT: The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today provided an update on the ongoing monitoring and repair efforts related to a turbid discharge below Cannonsville Dam. Repair work at the site is proceeding according to schedule. As of Wednesday, four relief wells were at some stage of production. One relief well was finished and pumping, and two others were expected to be pumping within the next 24 hours. The relief wells will end the turbid flow downstream of the dam by giving the pressurized groundwater an alternate path.

DEP also provided updates on two rounds of materials testing that showed the sediment causing the turbidity was coming from the immediate area of the original bore holes, and not from the earthen embankment area of the dam itself.

In addition, DEP has continued to provide the public with information as the work progresses. On Tuesday, DEP posted photos of the worksite, including an aerial image. These photos and additional information can be found on the DEP website and the department’s watershed Facebook page.

A more detailed update on the repair work and ongoing monitoring can be found on the DEP website.
