Freedom of Information Law Requests

Article 6 of the New York State Public Officers Law (FOIL) allows the public to submit written requests for access to NYC DOT records. Before making your request, check if the information you are looking for is already available.

If you are seeking records about your school speed zone, red light, or bus lane camera violation, please visit www.ViolationInfo.com as indicated on the top right hand corner of the Notice of Liability/Certificate Charging the Liability.

Making a FOIL Request

We strongly recommend that you submit FOIL requests electronically via NYC’s OpenRecords Portal.

If you are unable to submit a request electronically, you may mail your request to: New York City Department of Transportation, Records Access Officer, 55 Water Street, 4th floor, New York, NY 10041.

Some tips for a successful FOIL records search:

  • Be specific as to the records requested. Indicate the date or date range of records requested. If a request is location based, describe the location either as an address, an intersection or a block
  • The request must only be for records and not a question requiring an answer
  • Request only the records that you want

Cost

NYC DOT charges 25¢ per page of paper documents returned. This fee covers photocopying and must be paid before documents will be sent out.
