NYC DOT Releases 2011 Alternate Side Parking Calendar
New Yorkers can receive ASP and other updates directly to their phones
The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) today announced that the 2011 Alternate Side Parking (ASP) Rules Suspension Calendar is now posted on its Web site at nyc.gov/dot/asprules. Alerts for both planned and unscheduled ASP suspension can be obtained via several platforms, including e-mail and Twitter. The regular ASP calendar is also available for download to Outlook, Google and iCal calendars as part of DOT’s ongoing effort to expand the use of technology to make more information accessible. DOT also provides access to real-time traffic flow maps and data, parking regulations, weekly street closures and other changes to the City’s street network in formats useful to both the general public and application developers.
“New Yorkers are constantly on the move and depend on a steady stream of data to get where they’re going,” said DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. “By opening up our information and encouraging developers to use it, we hope to see the most modern, up-to-date applications available for New Yorkers to learn about real-time traffic and parking conditions.”
The 2011 ASP Rules Suspension Calendar may be imported into Outlook, iCal or Google Calendar and downloaded as a printer-ready PDF from DOT’s Web site at nyc.gov/dot/asprules. ASP status updates are made regularly to the City’s ASP Twitter feed at twitter.com/NYCASP, and are also available by calling 311. Printed calendars may be obtained by calling 311 as well.
Other high-tech traffic tools available to New Yorkers include:
- DOT’s Traffic Camera Maps Now With Travel Speeds: Displayed on the familiar Google Maps interface, this map shows traffic cameras in the NYC area as well as real-time speed data provided by sensors deployed along major arterial roadways. The data is also available in other formats for application developers. Visit nyctmc.org for more information.
- Parking Regulations Online: Motorists can research parking regulations on streets throughout the five boroughs by visiting nyc.gov/dot and clicking on “Motorists.” Data also is available for technology-savvy individuals to use to develop into more user-friendly applications at nyc.gov/dot/data.
- Traffic Information Delivered Right To You: Members of the public can subscribe to DOT’s RSS feeds to have weekly, weekend and special traffic advisories sent directly to a news aggregator such as Google Reader. Individuals or companies interested in getting real-time updates for street network changes can subscribe to an additional RSS feed that provides the locations and nature of these updates, such as one-way conversions and street direction reversals. Both feeds can be found at nyc.gov/dot/data.
- DOT on Facebook and Twitter: Join the DOT’s Facebook Fan Page, facebook.com/NYCDOT or follow DOT on Twitter, twitter.com/NYC_DOT to get updates on DOT projects, see new photos, and hear about upcoming community workshops and events. While this information is also posted to DOT’s Web site, the Twitter and Facebook pages provide another great way for social media users to access and share it.
- Other Social Media Tools: DOT is also using Flickr to share photos of public programs such as Weekend Walks and Urban Art installations at flickr.com/photos/nycstreets/. The agency's YouTube channel at youtube.com/nycdot houses DOT PSAs such as its “That’s Why It’s 30” traffic safety campaign to raise awareness about the standard speed limit in New York City and the dangers of speeding.
In addition to the holidays listed on the calendar, ASP regulations may be suspended from time to time to facilitate snow removal or in the case of other emergencies. The public can receive updates on these suspensions on nyc.gov, via DOT’s ASP e-mail list (sign-up at nyc.gov/dotnews), through the City’s ASP twitter feed at twitter.com/NYCASP, or by dialing 311.
