NYC DOT Announces Full Overnight Closure of Section of Eastbound Belt Parkway for Roadway Repairs
Roadway suffered damage from severe winter weather
The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) advises motorists that the eastbound Belt Parkway will be closed to traffic from Flatbush Avenue to Rockaway Parkway overnight for five consecutive nights starting on the evening of Monday, March 21 to facilitate the complete resurfacing of a portion of the roadway near the Mill Basin Bridge that has been significantly damaged during this winter’s severe weather. The full closure will begin at midnight and continue until 5 a.m. each night until all work is completed by 7 a.m. on Saturday, March 26. Motorists expecting to use the eastbound Belt Parkway during these hours are urged to plan ahead and consider alternate routes.
DOT has contacted other agencies including MTA Bridges & Tunnels and New York State Department of Transportation to use overhead variable message signs on major roadways in the area to notify drivers of the closure. DOT has also contacted the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Taxi and Limousine Commission to advise anyone driving to John F. Kennedy International Airport during this time to use alternate routes. In the event motorists are unable to use an alternate route, a local detour route for those exiting at Flatbush Avenue will be posted to direct them back to the Belt Parkway at Rockaway Parkway. DOT will post signs along the route to guide motorists and will take steps to mitigate the potential impact of additional traffic on these streets, such as adjusting signal timing and coordinating with NYPD to deploy Traffic Enforcement Agents at key intersections. Local community boards, elected officials and other City agencies have been notified of the temporary detour.
The posted detour route is as follows:
