NYC DOT Commissioner Sadik-Khan, NYC Bike Share Announce That Citi Bike Exceeds 1 Million Miles Traveled in Less Than Four Weeks
More than 100,000 daily, weekly and annual members have signed up, taking Citi Bikes for nearly 400,000 trips—150,000 of them in just the last week alone
New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and New York City Bike Share today announced the Citi Bike riders have pedaled a cumulative 1 million miles in less than four weeks since the bike share system launched—the equivalent of two round-trips to the moon. More than 100,000 people have signed up for Citi Bike memberships, including more than 45,000 annual members. Of the more than 385,000 Citi Bike rides taken since the May 27 system launch as of yesterday afternoon, more than 161,000 rides occurred in just the last seven days. Yesterday set a one-day ridership record of more than 30,000 rides, the second consecutive record day.
“Seeing this surge in riding throughout a work week is a sign that Citi Bike is as solidly in the transportation mix for daily commuters as it is for recreational riders,” said Commissioner Sadik-Khan. “As many Citi Bikes as we are seeing on the streets, there are still many times more riders using their own bikes, logging millions more miles traveled.”
Citi Bike launched on May 27 to annual members and June 2 to those purchasing daily and weekly passes with a credit card at station kiosks in the initial service area, including Manhattan below 59th Street and in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Williamsburg, Clinton Hill, Fort Greene and DUMBO, with bike share stations located every few blocks. Citi Bike is the nation’s largest bike share system and is funded by a $41 million sponsorship from Citi, one of the world’s leading global banks, and without City subsidy. Annual members receive an electronic key to undock a bike from any station, allowing unlimited trips up to 45 minutes without incurring any additional costs. Twenty-four-hour and seven-day access passes provide unlimited 30-minute trips.
