NYC DOT Resurfacing a Major Stretch of Bronx Roadway

DOT crews resurface Selwyn Avenue near 172nd Street and Morris Avenue, contributing more than 4,790 square yards of roadway resurfaced in the borough

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Bronx Roadway, Repair and Maintenance (RRM) crews resurfaced portions of Selwyn Avenue today from 172nd Street and 173rd Street, covering a total of 4,792 square yards of roadway. As part of DOT’s ongoing sustainable street resurfacing efforts, DOT’s crews have milled and resurfaced a total of 140 lane miles, or more than 985,000 square feet, of roadway in The Bronx this year.

“Safe roadways contribute to vibrant neighborhoods along crucial streets such as Selwyn Avenue,” said Bronx Borough Commissioner Constance Moran. “This work ensures smoother trips for motorists, commuters, pedestrians and cyclists.”

Selwyn Avenue connects with two major streets – Morris Avenue and 172nd Street – both which provide access to several main arterials, such as the Grand Concourse and Jerome Avenue, as well as highways like the Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95). Additionally, two public schools, two day care centers and the BX35 bus are all near the location. Other main roads recently resurfaced in The Bronx include both East and West Fordham Road, Gun Hill Road, University Avenue, and Jerome Avenue.

“The resurfacing of these roadways is a welcome development for the residents of our community. These efforts will go a long way in improving the safety of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, while ensuring our city functions more efficiently,” said State Senator Gustavo Rivera. “I want to thank the New York City Department of Transportation for their continued investment in our borough”

“Smooth roadways are the cornerstone of safety for drivers, bike riders, cyclists, and pedestrians and I want to thank Mayor de Blasio, City DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg and Bronx DOT Commissioner Constance Moran for making a valuable investment in the safety of our community by repaving a significant portion of Selwyn Avenue. Regular maintenance and upkeep of our streets and roadways is essential and plays an invaluable role in preserving our infrastructure. The Mount Eden community will positively benefit from this and I applaud the Administration for recognizing how critical maintained streets are to the overall success of our Vision Zero efforts,” said Council Member Vanessa L. Gibson (D-16th District, Bronx)

This resurfacing effort is part of Mayor de Blasio’s additional $242 million investment in roadways in all five boroughs that will help repave 1,200 lane miles through June 2016. The increased investment allows DOT to make streets safer and smoother for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists.

Resurfacing is a regularly scheduled operation that repairs defects on the surface of the roadway by replacing the top layer of asphalt pavement. It also addresses issues like potholes, cracking, hummocks, bumps and patches of street cuts.
