NYC DOT, DDC, and Queens Borough President Katz Celebrate Groundbreaking of New Queens Borough Hall Municipal Parking Lot

The 122,360 square foot lot will bring 302 additional parking spaces to Queens Borough Hall

New York City Department of Transportation Queens Borough Commissioner Nicole Garcia, Department of Design and Construction Associate Commissioner of Public Buildings Eric Boorstyn, and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz today celebrated the groundbreaking of the newly designed Queens Borough Hall municipal parking lot.

Through coordination with DDC, the original four deck parking structure, which was opened in November of 1963, was demolished in September of 2014 due to structural safety concerns. Tully Construction and WXY Studios were contracted to design and create a new municipal parking field at the location where the garage stood.

“I am pleased to work with DDC and Borough President Katz to bring municipal parking back to serve both Queens Borough Hall and the Queens Court Systems,” said Nicole Garcia, DOT Queens Borough Commissioner. “Among the many tools NYC DOT uses to create safer and less congested streets, municipal parking facilities can provide communities like Kew Gardens space that relieves the demand for on-street parking. With 302 spaces, parking in and around the borough’s vital civic center will be significantly improved.”

“This municipal lot will be a sustainable space for New Yorkers to easily access Queens Borough Hall and other nearby government buildings,” said DDC Commissioner Feniosky Peña-Mora. “DDC is proud to partner with the DOT and elected officials to bring forth a 21st century approach to parking areas by creating ample green space and making sure the space is conducive to cyclists, electric cars and people with disabilities.”

“Queens Borough Hall and the Queens Criminal Court are places where the people’s business is conducted, so it is important that there be sufficient parking available so that the people of Queens can easily access these buildings,” said Queens Borough President Melinda Katz. “The long-awaited, new municipal parking lot at Queens Borough Hall will alleviate current parking and traffic issues in the neighborhood and allow for more efficient processing of government business while also offering numerous modern amenities, including charging stations for electric vehicles.”

“Queens is on the rise, which means we are in constant need of new and improved infrastructure," said State Senator Leroy Comrie. "I commend Borough President Katz and Commissioner Garcia for recognizing and addressing this need by dedicating resources to building a state-of-the-art municipal parking lot.”

Opening in the fall of 2017, the new parking field will include six ADA spaces, one van accessible ADA space, seven motorcycle spaces, and four electric vehicle charging stations. The lot’s amenities also include new storm water management and sewer systems, sitting areas, ADA ramp access, lighting, and landscaping. The lot will be regulated by parking meters for use by motorists who wish to frequent Queens Borough Hall, and the various court offices. It will also provide the public with access to the many commercial businesses and modes of transportation in the community.
