Gouverneur Greets the Year of the Tiger with Festivities

Gouverneur celebrated the Chinese New Year and greeted the Year of the Tiger with a party for nursing facility residents on February 18, 2010. Gouverneur's Nursing Facility Chinese New Year Celebration is one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the Gouverneur calendar because of a diverse program that includes a variety of entertainment and activities. This year's program included a traditional Lion Dance, Kung Fu Demonstration, dance performances, and renditions of Chinese New Year songs. The five centenarian residents in Gouverneur's Nursing Facility were also honored.

Speakers at the celebration included Councilperson Margaret Chin, CCBA President Justin Yu, Fukien American Association President Kenneth Cheng and Executive Director Mendel Hagler. Buddhist Chaplain Chao Fan provided the invocation.

The Year of the Tiger, known for its dynamic nature, is apropos for Gouverneur. The modernization is proceeding swiftly and according to schedule. The new thirteenth floor 40-bed nursing facility residence and ambulatory care center are expected to be completed during the upcoming year.

It was necessary to move the Chinese New Year Celebration this year because of the ongoing construction on the thirteenth floor. Despite logistical challenges, the event was festive and residents and staff were able to greet the New Year on a positive note. Congratulations to Nursing Facility Administrator Tammy Carlisle, Recreational Medicine Director Maryethel Sowa and Gouverneur's dedicated outreach staff including Ms. Jannie Yee on putting together such a successful program.
