Chinese New Year 2014

Executive Director Dr. Martha Sullivan with honored guests.

Gouverneur Greets the Year of the Tiger With Festivities

Gouverneur celebrated the Chinese New Year and greeted the Year of the Horse with a party for nursing facility residents on February 14, 2014. Gouverneur’s Nursing Facility Chinese New Year Celebration is one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the Gouverneur calendar because of a diverse program that includes a variety of entertainment, presentations and speeches. This year’s program included a traditional Lion Dance, Kung Fu Demonstration by the Wan Chi Ming Gar Institute, dance performances, and renditions of Chinese New Year songs. The three centenarian residents in Gouverneur’s Nursing Facility were also honored.

Speakers at the celebration included Councilperson Margaret Chin, CCBA President Paul Ng, and Fukien American Association President Kenneth Cheng, HHC President Alan Aviles and Executive Director Dr. Martha Sullivan.

This year’s sign, the Horse, is associated with optimism and that’s fitting because Gouverneur have a lot to be optimistic about. The major modernization program is almost complete and as a result the Lower East Side community now has a state-of-the art healthcare facility that it deserves. Many exciting healthcare initiatives are also underway in the Skilled Nursing Facility and Diagnostic and Treatment Center.

The Chinese New Year Celebration was held in the first floor Gallery during the modernization project. Next year’s event is expected to be held in Gouverneur’s new Multi-purpose Room which was specially designed for special events.

Congratulations to Nursing Facility Administrator Robert Sussingham and Recreational Medicine Director Maryethel Sowa on putting together such a successful program.
