U.S. News & World Report Gives Highest Rating to two City Public Nursing Homes

U.S. News & World Report Gives Highest Rating to two City Public Nursing Homes in its 2013 “Best Nursing Homes” List

New York, NY - New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) President Alan D. Aviles announced today that two of HHC’s nursing homes have received the highest rating of five stars from U.S. News & World Report in the publication’s new best nursing homes list for 2013. Another received four stars overall.

U.S. News calculates its nursing homes scores using data collected by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). It then issues an overall rating for nursing homes of up to five stars, as well as ratings for detailed elements of each home, including health inspections, nurse staffing, and quality measures. U.S. News says that CMS has approved its ratings methodology.

The Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center Home in Staten Island, and the Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital and Nursing Facility on Roosevelt Island, both received a five star overall rating. The Dr. Susan Smith McKinney Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Brooklyn received four stars overall. Sea View and Coler-Goldwater also achieved a five star rating for performance on measures of quality.

“This honor confirms that New York City’s public nursing homes are some of the nation’s best, and that patients in our care receive top flight services and attention,” said Aviles. “The recognition by U.S. News is a tribute to the diligent work of the HHC staff who make extraordinary care possible.”

Sea View Hospital and Rehabilitation Center and Home, with 304 beds, is located in Staten Island's lush Greenbelt. It is known for its long-term care brain injury unit, the first in New York State. Patients undergo intensive rehabilitation with the goals of restoring motor and cognitive functions and maximizing quality of life. The facility also engages patients with Alzheimer's and related dementias by providing purposeful activity, consistency and structure, personalized treatment plans, and a multi-disciplinary team approach to care.

At Coler-Goldwater on Roosevelt Island, with just over 2,000 beds, each patient is assigned to a physician-led interdisciplinary team of clinical professionals, who develop a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan. Because physicians are based on-site, they are able to closely monitor their patients and interact readily with team members.

Coler-Goldwater provides state-of-the-art care with Centers of Excellence in areas including geriatrics, rehabilitation and ventilator dependence, and actually maintains the highest number of long term care ventilator beds in the United States. Older patients also benefit from the facility's academic relationship with the New York University Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program.
