New York City Loft Board
Certificate of Occupancy

After complying with the fire and safety provisions of Article 7-B of the Multiple Dwelling Law, an owner is required to take all necessary and reasonable steps to obtain a final certificate of occupancy, which reflects the residential occupancy of the IMD units.  This may involve completing additional work in the building, as well as, resolving open job applications and clearing New York City Department of Buildings ("DOB") and New York City Environmental Control Board ("ECB") violations (sign-off).  For detailed information on the sign-off and final certificate of occupancy process, see the DOB's "certificate of occupancy" section on the DOB website. The deadline for obtaining a certificate of occupancy is posted on our website under the Code Compliance Timetable heading.
