MAYOR GIULIANI OUTLINES MILLENNIUM CLEAN UP EFFORTS

Thanks City Workers for Dedicated Service During Celebrations And Through Holiday Weekend

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today thanked New York City workers for making the Millennium celebrations safe and gave an update on the City's clean up efforts. The Mayor was joined by Sanitation Commissioner Kevin Farrell, Police Commissioner Howard Safir, Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen, Information, Technology and Telecommunications Commissioner Allan Dobrin, Emergency Management Director Jerome Hauer, and Year 2000 Project Director Brian Cohen, during his remarks at Times Square.

"Last night we entered the new Millennium with a celebration the likes New York City has never seen," Mayor Giuliani said. "Now that the party's over, Sanitation workers are hard at work, so that Monday will be business as usual in the Capital of the World. I would like to thank the dedicated men and women of the City of New York who will be working throughout this holiday weekend. The Police, Fire, Transportation, and Sanitation Departments especially deserve the appreciation of all New Yorkers for their extraordinary efforts."

As soon as the crowd began to disperse in Times Square early this morning, over one hundred Sanitation workers on foot and driving street cleaning machines which were strategically located on side streets, descended upon the area to begin the clean up. 35 tons of confetti and other garbage, almost twice the usual amount for a New Year's celebration, are being swept up by sixty pieces of mechanized equipment including Front End Loaders, Mobile Liter Patrol Scooters, Mechanical Brooms, Utility Haulsters, and Back Pack Blowers. Sanitation workers were assisted by employees of the Times Square Business Improvement District.

Through seven shifts ending on Sunday night, over 8,000 uniformed Sanitation workers will have worked across the City for the during the clean up effort. The estimated cost of Sanitation's effort across the City is $3 million, approximately twice the cost of a regular holiday weekend.
