MAYOR GIULIANI KICKS OFF FIRST WINTER RESTAURANT WEEK 2000

From January 31st Through February 4th More Than 80 Restaurants Are Offering $20.00 Prix-Fixe Lunch Menus

Diners Encouraged To Participate In The World's Largest and Best Canned Food Drive By Bringing Non-Perishable Canned Foods to Participating Restaurants

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, Cristyne F. Lategano, President and Chief Executive Officer of NYC & Company and Tim Zagat, Chairman of NYC & Company, today kicked off the first Winter Restaurant Week 2000 at City Hall (restaurant) in Lower Manhattan today with Chef-owner Henry Meer. The weeklong celebration is expected to become an annual event.

Starting today, as part of the City's Paint the Town Red winter celebration, New Yorkers and visitors alike can enjoy prix-fixe lunches for $20.00 -- beverage, tax and gratuity excluded -- at some of New York City's top restaurants through this Friday, February 4th. In addition, as part of The World's Largest and Best Canned Food Drive; more than 40 of the participating restaurants are encouraging diners to bring cans of non-perishable food to be collected by City Harvest, a leading hunger relief organization in New York City.

"Winter Restaurant Week 2000 offers thousands of New Yorkers and visitors the opportunity to enjoy great food and fine dining at some of the top restaurants in New York City for just $20.00," said Mayor Giuliani. "With more than 18,000 restaurants that serve everything from steaks and sushi to soul food and Spanish cuisine, New York City has it all. As part of NYC & Company's Paint the Town Red winter celebration, this week will further promote New York City's restaurant industry, which helps draw more than 34 million visitors to our City. No other city comes close to offering the diversity, the quality and the overall exceptional dining experience that New York City does. I encourage all New Yorkers to take advantage of Winter Restaurant Week 2000 as well as to help out by donating to The World's Largest and Best Canned Food Drive, as we celebrate New York City's status as The Restaurant Capital of the World."

This weeklong event, which is designed to promote New York City as The Restaurant Capital of the World, is presented by NYC & Company and sponsored by American Express, Continental Airlines, Citysearch and The New York Times.
