Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani hosted a reception this evening at Gracie Mansion to celebrate the contributions of the Irish American community in New York City and proclaimed March Irish American Heritage Month in New York City. The Mayor presented the proclamation to Consul General of Ireland Barrie Robinson. The Mayor was joined by Economic Development Corporation President and Master of Ceremonies Michael Carey, Grand Marshall of the 2000 St. Patrick's Day Parade, Dr. Kevin Cahill, Saturday Night Live star Colin Quinn, and members of New York City's Irish American community.
"Irish American Heritage Month gives us the opportunity to celebrate the contributions of the Irish American community to New York City," said Mayor Giuliani. "New York City's greatness is a direct result of the millions of immigrants who have come here to build a better life for themselves and their families. Their diversity serves as a common thread that binds all New Yorkers together and constantly rejuvenates and reinvigorates our City. This City's Irish-American citizens are an integral part of that history and renewal and tonight we honor their contributions to our great City.
"This year's parade will commemorate the many Irish veterans of the Korean War, as this year marks the 50th Anniversary of the conflict. It will provide us with the opportunity to honor these veterans who risked their lives to preserve the freedom of Americans and people around the world," the Mayor concluded.
Tonight's celebration featured a performance by the step-dancing group Dancing on Dangerous Ground, featuring award-winning Irish dancers Jean Butler and Colin Dunne.
