Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani announced today that, according to employment figures released by the New York State Department of Labor, New York City's private sector job growth continues with the creation of 18,000 new private sector jobs in January.
This follows last year's record job growth, when more than 83,800 private sector jobs were created, surpassing the previous record of 76,200 new jobs in 1998. Since January 1994 the City has created 380,000 jobs -- a 14% gain -- a dramatic reversal after the City's loss of 348,000 jobs during the last recession.
"This is great news for New York City and a great start to the new Millennium," said Mayor Giuliani. "Following the record private sector job growth in 1999, which was the City's best performance in more than 40 years, today's numbers are further proof that our City's economic renaissance continues. With the creation of more than 380,000 jobs since January 1994, New York City continues to set an example for the rest of the nation."
