MAYOR GIULIANI AND FIRE COMMISSIONER THOMAS VON ESSEN
REMIND ALL NEW YORKERS TO CHANGE THEIR SMOKE DETECTOR BATTERIES
AS THEY CHANGE THEIR CLOCKS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen today reminded all New Yorkers, that as they move their clocks forward to Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, April 2nd, they should also replace the batteries in their smoke detectors. Fire prevention experts nationwide agree that smoke detectors save lives - but they need to be functioning properly in order to do so.

"When New Yorkers change their clocks to Daylight Savings Time this Sunday, they should also replace the batteries in their smoke detectors," the Mayor said. "Without question, smoke detectors can and do save lives, but everyone must be vigilant in keeping them in good working order. An operable smoke detector is one of the simplest and least expensive ways to safeguard you, your family and your property from the devastation caused by fires."

Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen said, "In a fire, a smoke detector can provide those few extra minutes that make the difference between life and death. I urge everyone to take the time this weekend to replace the batteries in the smoke detectors in your home or office as you change your clocks. A smoke detector can save your life -- but only if it's working."

Smoke detectors can be purchased for as little as $5 and can easily be installed in a matter of minutes with only small hand tools. Throughout this weekend, New York City Fire Department personnel will be handing out more than 100,000 smoke detector batteries at major transportation hubs in all five boroughs, including: the Staten Island Ferry Terminal; Jamaica Center in Queens; 161st Street Station at Fordham Road; the Grand Concourse in the Bronx; Fulton Street Mall in Brooklyn; and on West 168th Street in Washington Heights. Each nine volt battery comes in an envelope featuring important fire safety information. Members of the New York City Fire Department's Fire Safety and Education Unit will be on hand to answer any questions regarding fire safety or the proper placement of smoke detectors in your home.
