STATEMENT FROM DEPUTY MAYOR ANTHONY COLES REGARDING
THE SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM

"It's mind-boggling that the teachers' union would turn down an unprecedented offer of more money for its members, above and beyond the existing collective bargaining agreement, simply because a portion of it was in the form of merit pay for the best teachers. But we welcome the Board of Education's effort to attract the very best teachers from all schools in the metropolitan area to teach summer school, and we encourage the Board to recruit vigorously.

"We are concerned, however, that the Board seems to be trying to lower expectations for students in summer school, rather than focusing its efforts on being accountable for raising performance.

"There is every opportunity for a very successful summer school program, and we look forward to seeing the Board's plan for its full implementation."
