MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS "QUESTIONABLE QUEST DAY"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Release #152-00 Wednesday, April 26, 2000 www.ci.nyc.ny.us Contact: Sunny Mindel/ Edward Skyler (212) 788-2958 MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS "QUESTIONABLE QUEST DAY" Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed "Questionable Quest Day" in New York City. "Questionable Quest," a musical set to salsa music, will make its United States premier tonight at the Beacon Theatre, performed by 38 students from the Palmas Academy. The Palmas Academy was destroyed in 1998 when Hurricane Georges ravaged Puerto Rico.

"I witnessed firsthand the devastation that Hurricane Georges wreaked upon Puerto Rico," Mayor Giuliani said. "The bricks and mortar of the Palmas Academy were not spared, but through their resilience and determination, its students have demonstrated that its spirit is alive and well. I am proud to welcome this intrepid group to New York City."

The music to "Questionable Quest" was composed by 12 year-old Palmas student William Fox. The cast ranges in ages, from 8 to 15. Proceeds from the performances, which will run through this weekend, will pay for the reconstruction of the school. "Relatively Speaking," another musical performed by Palmas students raised $100,000 for the same purpose.

The Palmas Academy was founded in 1992 by parents who wanted to create a learning environment that combined high academic standards with creative expression. Located in Humaca o, Puerto Rico, the Palmas Academy has earned an international reputation as a leader in arts education. The school's unique curriculum allows its students to gain confidence in their creative abilities while achieving success in traditional academic subjects. The academy currently enrolls 367 students from around the world, from pre-kindergarten through the tenth grade.
