MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT CHANGES
NAME OF STREET TO GERSHWIN WAY

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 718, sponsored by Council Members Quinn, Eisland, Michels and O'Donovan, would name West 50th Street, between 8th Avenue and Broadway in Manhattan, as Gershwin Way, and repeal the 1999 designation of this street as George Gershwin Way.

Following the enactment of Local Law Number 77 of 1999, it was determined that designating West 50th Street, between 8th Avenue and Broadway, as George Gershwin Way failed to recognize the unique partnership and achievements of both George and Ira Gershwin. In order to correct this omission, this proposed local law would simply repeal the prior designation and replace it with the more inclusive "Gershwin Way" designation.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
