MAYOR GIULIANI COLLECTS ON WAGER WITH QUEENS BOROUGH
PRESIDENT SHULMAN ON YANKEES/METS SUBWAY SERIES

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today collected on his wager with and Queens Borough President Claire Shulman on the June Subway Series between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets. The series was tied 1-1, but because of rain the third game was cancelled and rescheduled for the evening of July 8th. After the Yankees beat the Mets, thus clinching the best of three game series, the Mayor contacted Borough President Shulman's office to collect on the wager.

Since the Mets lost Borough President Shulman will give the Mayor:
  • Italian ices from the famed Lemon Ice King of Corona, located at 52-02 108th Street in Queens.
  • Mama's special hero sandwiches from the popular Corona, Queens deli, Leo's Latticini, located at 46-02 104th Street.

"The prospect of a Yankees/Mets World Series has all New Yorkers eagerly awaiting this weekend's three-game match-up between our home teams," said Mayor Giuliani. "Although Claire Shulman and I each have our favorite team -- and one of us will lose this friendly wager -- when it comes to the Mets and Yankees, the entire City wins big. The Mets and Yankees are constant sources of pride for sports fans and non-sports fans alike. Let's hope that the weekend showdown between the Yankees and the Mets turns out to be a preview of this year's World Series."

Queens Borough President Shulman said, "We look forward to a great match-up that will result in a victory for the Mets. Good weather, combined with good pitching, will make for an exciting series for all New Yorkers. Let's go Mets!"
