MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT NAMES
BRONX STREET AFTER LAVERIA A. ROSS

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 404, sponsored by Council Members Rivera and Foster, would add the name Laveria A. Ross Place to Mohegan Avenue, between East 179th Street and East 180th Street, in the Bronx.

Laveria Alva Connor was born in New York City on February 15, 1935. In 1963 she married Pearly T. Ross. From 1966 until 1979, Mrs. Ross served the City's children as a school crossing guard. In 1982, she became a foster parent with the Harlem Dowling Children's Foster Home. She went on to care for 250 foster children, many on an emergency basis.

Mrs. Ross was an active member of Bronx Community Planning Board Number 6 and founded the Mohegan Art of Rock Community Association, a group dedicated to maintaining and improving recreational services.

Unfortunately, on December 16, 1997, Laveria A. Ross passed away.

Therefore, to commemorate her work with foster children, and her dedication to the community, it is fitting that Mohegan Avenue, between East 179th and 180th Streets, be named Laveria A. Ross Place.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
