MAYOR GIULIANI WELCOMES "UPTOWN GOES DOWNTOWN"
CEREMONY TO CITY HALL

Proclaims August, 2000 "Harlem Week 2000" Month and Honors Recipients of
Harlem Week Scholarship Awards

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed August, 2000 to be "Harlem Week 2000" month and honored recipients of the 2000 Harlem Week Scholarship Awards. The Mayor was joined at City Hall by Deputy Mayor Rudy Washington, Deputy Mayor Robert Harding, State Senator David Paterson, Lloyd Williams, Chair of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, and several members of the Boards of Harlem Week and the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce.

The annual Harlem Week Festival was started 26 years ago by the Uptown Chamber of Commerce, now the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, as part of an effort to revitalize the Harlem community.

"Each of you who has been awarded a college scholarship from the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce has already shown an understanding of the importance of education," said Mayor Giuliani. "As recipients of these scholarships you join a long and proud list of New Yorkers. Wherever you choose to attend college I am confident that you will represent this great City with the same enthusiasm and dedication that earned you these scholarships. I am proud to take part in this ceremony honoring you as young ambassadors of New York City."

Harlem Week Scholarships are awarded annually by the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce. Over the past 20 years, approximately 1,000 scholarships, totaling over one million dollars, have been awarded to New York City high school seniors. This year fifteen young adults from throughout the City were awarded the scholarships.
