GIULIANI ADMINISTRATION OUTLINES STEPS CITY HAS TAKEN
TO IMPLEMENT LOCAL LAW 29

Law Requires City Agencies to Distribute Voter Registration Forms to Clients
Applying for Services or Changing Addresses

The Giuliani Administration today outlined the numerous steps the City has taken to implement Local Law 29, which passed the City Council on May 10, 2000 and was signed by Mayor Giuliani on May 25, 2000. The law requires certain agencies and their contractors to distribute voter registration forms to clients when they make a written application for services or when they recertify or change their address.

During the past three months, 19 designated Mayoral agencies have been preparing for the distribution of voter registration forms with their written applications for services pursuant to the law. Specifically, the Mayoral agencies have been:

The new law will go into effect on August 23, 2000, pending approval of the U.S. Department of Justice. The City Law Department has contacted the Justice Department to request pre-clearance under the Voting Rights Act for implementation of Local Law 29. The City will not implement the law until the Justice Department grants the City formal approval.
