MAYOR GIULIANI, POLICE COMMISSIONER KERIK AND
PROTOCOL COMMISSIONER HALLIGAN REVIEW THE CITY'S
UNITED NATIONS MILLENNIUM SUMMIT PREPARATIONS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik and United Nations, Consular Corps and Protocol Commissioner Irene Halligan today reviewed the City's provisions for accommodating the United Nations Millennium Summit, the largest gathering of world leaders ever assembled. The Summit will be held from September 6th through September 8th, 2000.

"The City of New York is honored to host the United Nations, and will provide all the support we can to ensure the safety and smooth operation of this historic summit," said Mayor Giuliani. "The NYPD and the New York City Commission for the United Nations, Consular Corp and Protocol - along with the United States Department of State - have worked closely with the United Nations to minimize the impact of this historic event on the community."

"The NYPD is proud to represent New York City during this unprecedented event and we will be doing everything possible to both ensure the safety of our guests and to minimize the inconvenience experienced by the city's residents," said Commissioner Kerik. "We have dedicated a substantial contingent of personnel and resources to ensure that this Millennium Summit will be as successful and as safe as the Millennium Celebration held on New Year's Eve, and our officers are looking forward to serving once again as the city's ambassadors of goodwill."

"In preparation for the Millennium Summit we, along with the NYPD, have reached out to the community and specifically briefed Community Board six and community group leaders on our plans to accommodate resident's needs during the Summit," said Commissioner Halligan. "Mayor's Office personnel will be working in conjunction with the Police Department at specific check points to facilitate access for local residents and businesses within the affected area during the Summit, keeping the disruption of local services to a minimum."
