Honors Finalists Competing for "North America's Best Singing Pet" Title
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today congratulated and presented certificates of recognition to nine pet finalists in the Advantage Singing Pets Contest which will determine "North America's Best Singing Pet." The winner will be selected tomorrow at a South Street Seaport ceremony which runs from 11 AM to 12 PM. The contest benefits the Humane Society of New York and is sponsored by Bayer Corporation, the maker of Advantage flea control products.
"I wish the best of luck to all of these talented animals and their proud owners," Mayor Giuliani said. "While only one of these musically-gifted pets will win the top singing title, each of the contestants has earned the admiration and affection of everyone here today."
The contestants visiting City Hall today were "Brandy", a Calico cat from Philadelphia, PA owned by Kristin Conran; "Buddy", a Chihuahua/Terrier mix from Raleigh, NC owned by David and Jill Fetters; "Cecil", a Fox Terrier from Santa Rosa, CA owned by Bill Hagemann;; "Diefenbaker", a Siberian Husky from Warner Robins, GA owned by Marilea Butler; "Gracie", an English Pointer from Roselle, IL owned by Denise and Dennis Wight; "Grainne", a Border Collie/Springer Spaniel Mix from Portland, OR owned by Mary Lowes; "Greta", a Boxer from St. Petersburg, FL owned by Peggy Ness; "Lewis", a Welsh Terrier from Winnipeg, Canada owned by Maria Prymak-Irvine; and "Suzie", a Boston Terrier from Platte Woods, MO owned by Annette Packard.
Since 1997, hundreds of canines and felines have vied for "North America's
Best Singing Pet" title. This year, approximately 300 cats and dogs performed
at local auditions held in 16 cities across North America. The grand prize
winner will receive a year supply of Advantage flea control products, a cash
prize, a professional recording studio session and an opportunity to be featured
in an Advantage advertisement.
