MAYOR GIULIANI HONORS RABBI ARTHUR SCHNEIER
FOR FORTY YEARS OF LEADERSHIP ON BEHALF OF
RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AND HUMAN RIGHTS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani was joined this morning by leaders of the diplomatic, religious, business and media communities in honoring Rabbi Arthur Schneier for his four decades of spiritual leadership benefiting the people of New York and his advancement of human rights and religious freedom.

"Through his work to advance the causes of peace, freedom and human rights, Rabbi Schneier is a shining example not only of what a great New Yorker can be, but of the greatness of the human spirit," said Mayor Giuliani. "His spiritual leadership has spanned the globe, transcending ideology and theology. His work and leadership on behalf of religious freedom, human rights and inter-religious cooperation have influenced and been recognized by four American Presidents."

Rabbi Schneier was born in Vienna, Austria and lived in Nazi-occupied Budapest during World War II. He arrived in the United States in 1947 and has been the spiritual leader of Park East Synagogue in New York City since 1962. He is also the founder and President of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, which works to resolve conflicts around the world.
