Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani tonight held a reception in the Public Hearing Chamber
celebrating Hispanic Parade Day in New York City. This reception is in honor
of the Hispanic Parade to be held this Sunday, October 8th. The Parade is held
on Fifth Avenue, with thousands of New Yorkers representing 52 different Hispanic
organizations marching each year to celebrate pride in their heritage as well
as unity in their diversity.
"Since its beginnings in the summer of 1965, The Hispanic Day Parade has
been dedicated to conveying the breadth and depth of Hispanic American culture,
as well as emphasizing the pride in the heritage that Hispanic Americans share,"
Mayor Giuliani said. "New York City is home to more than seven and a half
million people, speaking more than 120 languages, and representing more than
200 different national origins and ethnicities. And although 30% of the people
of our City can be described as Hispanic, they represent cultures and countries
as different as Cuba and Columbia, Puerto Rico and Panama, as well as the Dominican
Republic and the country of Spain itself."
Joining the Mayor at the reception were President of the Hispanic Day Parade
Miriam Jimendez, Coordinator of the Hispanic Day Parade Elias lllescas, and
New York Board of Education Member and former Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra.
The 36th Annual Hispanic Parade will be held this Sunday, October 8th, beginning at 44th Street and traveling North on Fifth Avenue to 79th Street. This year's Grand Marshall of the Parade is Oscar De La Renta.
