MAYOR GIULIANI AND SANITATION COMMISSIONER FARRELL OFFICIATE AT PROMOTION, SWEARING-IN AND RECOGNITION CEREMONY

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Sanitation Commissioner Kevin P. Farrell officiated today at a ceremony where over 300 Sanitation employees were graduated, promoted to higher ranks, or recognized for outstanding work performance and acts of heroism.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I want to extend my congratulations to each of you, whether you are graduating, earning a promotion, or being awarded for meritorious duty - all of you represent the best of this department and our City," said Mayor Giuliani. "The 270 of you who are graduating today, should realize that your work makes it possible for 7.4 million people to live and work together. Those of you being promoted should remember how far we have come. And those of you being honored by this department should know that your commitment and excellence are examples for everyone in this room, and for every New Yorker."

"I am very pleased by the caliber of the Department's employees being recognized here today," said Commissioner Farrell. "They are among the best that this agency has to offer as evidenced by the job they do on a daily basis and service they provide to all New Yorkers."

270 new Sanitation Workers were administered the oath of office. In the uniformed ranks, four supervisors were promoted to General Superintendent Level I while six General Superintendents were elevated to higher levels.

Peter Montalbano, a 34-year veteran of the Sanitation Department, was sworn in as First Deputy Commissioner - the Department's second highest position. Bennett Dickerson, another 34-year Department veteran, was officially appointed as a three star chief.

For exemplary work performance, members of the Department's Permit Inspection Unit (PIU) received the esteemed Unit Citation.

Seven employees received Heroism Awards for acts of bravery and Father Vincent Termine, who is retiring as Department Chaplain, was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for his 34 years of dedicated service to the Department.
