Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed Tuesday, October 10th, New York Rangers'
75th Anniversary Day in New York City, in recognition of the team's historic
milestone. The Mayor, who was joined by National Hockey League Commissioner
Gary Bettman, New York Rangers Owner James Dolan, New York Rangers President
and General Manager Glen Sather and New York Rangers Captain Mark Messier, also
celebrated the Rangers' 2000-2001 season home opener, which will be played tomorrow
night at Madison Square Garden.
"It's a pleasure to welcome so many past and present Rangers to City Hall
today for this special occasion," said Mayor Giuliani. "75 years ago,
the New York Rangers strapped on their skates for the very first time. In only
their second season, the Rangers won the Stanley Cup, a feat no other team has
accomplished.
"The Rangers also won the Stanley Cup in 1933, 1940, and - most recently - in 1994. Tomorrow night, the Rangers, with Captain Mark Messier and all-stars Brian Leetch, Adam Graves, and Mike Richter, will play the first home game of their 2000-2001 season and will, no doubt, go on to provide New Yorkers with one of the most exciting hockey seasons ever. On behalf of all New Yorkers I want to wish the Rangers the best of luck this year and, in recognition of all their hard work over the past 75 years, declare Tuesday, October 10th, New York Rangers' 75th Anniversary Day in New York City."
