MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL NAMING MANHATTAN STREET
AFTER DR. JOHN HENRIK CLARKE

Remarks by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 739, sponsored by Council Member Perkins, and several of his colleagues, would add the name "Dr. John Henrik Clarke Place" to 137th Street, between Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard and Frederick Douglass Boulevard, in Manhattan.

Dr. John Henrik Clarke was born in Union Springs, Alabama on January 1, 1915. Although he had little formal education, his quest for knowledge led him to read thousands of books. A recognized authority on Africa and African history, he authored many books and pamphlets on the African historical experience and served as a professor at several colleges.

Unfortunately, Dr. Clarke died on July 16, 1998. Therefore, based on Dr. Clarke's educational contributions, it is fitting that West 137th Street, between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard and Frederick Douglass Boulevard, be named "Dr. John Henrik Clarke Place."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
