MAYOR GIULIANI, POLICE COMMISSIONER KERIK RENAME TOT-LOT
IN HONOR OF LT. FEDERICO NARVAEZ

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani joined Police Commissioner Bernard B. Kerik today ain renaming the Argyle Tot-Lot at Argyle Road & Cortelyou Road in Brooklyn as the "Lt. Federico Narvaez Tot-Lot". On October 18, 1996, while on patrol in the 70th Precinct, Lt. Federico Narvaez was shot and killed by a suspect he was attempting to apprehend.

Lt. Narvaez joined the NYPD on November 7, 1979. He was promoted to Sergeant on November 28, 1985 and promoted to Lieutenant on July 30, 1993. Throughout his 17-year career he received several letters of commendation and was recognized by the NYPD five times for excellent police duty and one time for meritorious police duty.

"Today we honor a devoted husband, father, son, loyal friend and dedicated public servant who once walked the streets of this precinct, and selflessly served both the New York Police Department and the people of our City," said Mayor Giuliani. "Lt. Narvaez understood the impact he could have on the job. He realized that the future of our City would one day be in the hands of our children, and he was committed to making a connection with the young people of our City and bettering their future. That's why it is fitting to be dedicating this playground in his honor. It will also serve as a reminder for every child that the principles of service, community, and love should fill their lives every day."

"Four years ago today, Freddy Narvaez made the ultimate sacrifice that a human being can make for another person," said Commissioner Kerik. "At a time in his career when he could have just issued orders, he did something that defines the essence of being a police officer-- he stepped forward to help someone else. Freddy did what heroes do -- he got involved, he placed himself between danger and those he was sworn to protect, and that courageous act cost him his life. It is incredibly fitting, and I think Freddy would take enormous pride in the fact that a playground that is filled with the laughter of children will now bear his name."

Lt. Narvaez is survived by his wife Marilyn, their thirteen year-old daughter Katrina and his brother David.
