MAYOR GIULIANI COMMISSIONER KERIK DEDICATE PLAQUE IN HONOR
OF NYPD AUTO MECHANIC LAWRENCE KOMNICK

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani joined Police Commissioner Bernard B. Kerik today in dedicating a plaque in honor of Lawrence E. Komnick. Mr. Komnick, a thirteen-year veteran of the Police Department's Fleet Services Division, was killed in the line of duty on October 27, 1998 while working on an NYPD Emergency Service Unit truck. The plaque was donated by Mr. Komnick's former coworkers at NYPD Fleet Services in Woodside, Queens.

"We are here today to honor the life of Lawrence Komnick, a thirteen-year veteran of the Police Department's Fleet Services Division, who died on the job two years ago," said Mayor Giuliani. "His expertise was so well known around the Fleet Services Division that it was said, 'When police officers need help, they call for the Emergency Services Unit. But when the Emergency Services Unit needs help with their trucks, they call Larry.' That is how important Larry's contributions were to the people who keep our city the safest large city in America. In a very real sense, Larry's work kept the Department moving."

"This plaque is one way to show our gratitude to the family of Larry Komnick and pledge that we will never forget him or his contributions to New York City. Larry's dedication and devotion kept our Police Department ready to answer the call of duty," the Mayor continued.

"As an NYPD Auto Mechanic, Lawrence Kormnick didn't get the headlines and the media attention, but his talents made it possible for the NYPD to help the people that need us the most," said Commissioner Kerik. "This plaque stands as a permanent reminder of a decent and dedicated man, who loved his work and the City he so proudly served. He will never be forgotten by his NYPD family."

Mr. Komnick is survived by his wife, Anna, their two daughters Allison and Lauren, his mother, Alice, his sister, Kathleen Gill, his brother Vincent, and his nephew, John Gill, who is a police officer in the 103rd precinct in Queens.
