DEPUTY MAYOR HARDING AND NYC & COMPANY KICK OFF 2ND ANNUAL PAINT THE TOWN RED: NEW YORK CITY'S WINTER CELEBRATION

Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Finance Robert M. Harding -- attending on behalf of Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani -- today joined NYC & Company Chairman Tim Zagat, NYC & Company President & CEO Cristyne Lategano-Nicholas, and Paint the Town Red pokesperson and New York Post columnist Cindy Adams, to roll out a red carpet in front of NYC & Company's Official Visitor Information Center to kick off the City's second annual Paint the Town Red: New York City's Winter Celebration. This year Paint the Town Red will take place from January 5th through February 28th, and will offer visitors and residents savings at more than 250 restaurants, hotels, theaters and cultural institutions throughout the City's five boroughs.

This year's Paint the Town Red celebrations will include: Winter Restaurant Week, which will take place from January 29th through February 2nd, during which more than 100 of the City's best restaurants will offer three-course prix-fixe lunches for only $20.01 (not including beverage, tax and gratuity); and the Insider's Hour program, 60- minute highlight tours at more than 60 cultural institutions including museums, performing arts centers, botanical gardens, zoos and historical sites, which will take place from January 5th through March 31st.

"It's my pleasure to announce the second annual Paint the Town Red Winter Celebration," said Deputy Mayor Harding. "Now, during the months of January and February, when the City is usually less crowded, New Yorkers and visitors alike will have the opportunity to take advantage of great deals at more than 250 businesses, restaurants and cultural institutions. As the Restaurant Capital of the World, New York offers diners a lunch for just $20.01 at more than 100 of the City's best restaurants. This year there's also a special 'Insider's Hour' program, in which more than 60 cultural institutions in our city will offer one-hour tours that highlight their collections and facilities. Winter is a great time of the year in New York City and I encourage everyone this winter to get out and Paint the Town Red."

"Tourism's total economic impact in 2001 could well exceed $24 billion dollars - that's more than $3,000 for every New York City resident," said NYC & Company Chairman Tim Zagat. "But tourism drops off considerably in the winter months, after the holidays, in January and February. That's why Paint the Town Red is such a critical marketing program."

"Red represents warmth, romance, celebration and fun," said NYC & Company President & CEO Cristyne Lategano-Nicholas. "Painting the Town Red, of course, represents going out and taking advantage of all the great things New York has to offer."

Beginning this evening many of New York City's landmarks, including the Empire State Building, the Lincoln Center fountain, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Madison Square Garden, the New York Public Library, the South Street Seaport Museum, the Nasdaq Marketsite Experience, the Grand Army Plaza Monument in Prospect Park, and the Washington Square Arch will be illuminated in red.

In an effort to promote Paint the Town Red, in addition to the print and mass transit advertisements, NYC & Company has created radio ads featuring Mayor Giuliani, Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, New York Post columnist Cindy Adams, and "Welcome to New York" television star Christine Baranski.

Individuals who wish to receive a free copy of the Paint the Town Red guide detailing specific events and savings should call (800) NYC-VISIT, visit www.nycvisit.com on the Web, or stop by New York City's Official Visitor Information Center located at 810 Seventh Avenue, at 53rd Street.

Among this year's Paint the Town Red sponsors are American Express, Continental Airlines, The New York Times, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, New York State and CitySearch.com.
