MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL NAMING BRONX CORNER "MAUDE STEINER CORNER"

Remarks by Mayor Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The next bill before me is Introductory Number 660, sponsored by Council Members Provenzano, Abel and Golden. This bill would add the name "Maude Steiner Corner" to the southeast corner of Campbell Drive and Agar Place, in the Bronx.

Maude Steiner was born and raised in the Bronx. She attended P.S. 36 and graduated from Evander Childs High School, where she met her future husband, Joseph Steiner.

Maude Steiner gave many years of service to the community in the Country Club section of the Bronx. In response to the periodic flooding of homes on Campbell Drive, she led the long and successful fight to install sewers in the area. She helped to found the Country Club Civic Association, and she was elected the Association's first president. Maude Steiner also served on Community Board #10 for over 25 years.

Sadly, Maude Steiner died on June 8, 1999.

Therefore, based on her dedicated service to her community, it is fitting that the southeast corner of Campbell Drive and Agar Place be named Maude Steiner Corner.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
