Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani announced today that, according to the Employment/ Unemployment reports released today by the State Department of Labor, New York City continues to grow jobs at a healthy rate, adding 8,900 new private sector jobs in April.
The report also revised the March Employment/Unemployment report indicating
that 6,800 jobs were added that month. Overall, the year-over-year private
employment is up 79,800 jobs, or 2.6% in the City.
"This is terrific news for New York City," said Mayor Giuliani.
"For the City to add 8,900 new private sector jobs last month in spite
of a slowing national economy and 6,800 jobs the month before, once again
proves our resiliency and our strength as a regional economy. The addition
of these jobs, especially in this environment, shows that the City is ideally
positioned to withstand downturns in the national economy."
The Mayor also noted that unemployment figures (seasonally adjusted) inched
up slightly to 5.4% in April from 5.1% March.
