The next bill before me, Introductory Number 887, sponsored by Council Members Foster and Carrion, would add the name "Rev. Ruben Dario Colon Place" to Woodycrest Avenue, between West 167th and West 168th Streets, in the Bronx.
Ruben Dario Colon was born on May 15, 1923 in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. He was educated at the University of Puerto Rico and the Lutheran Theological Seminary. Rev. Colon came to New York in 1946 and was ordained a minister at Mariner's Baptist Temple in Manhattan in 1950.
Rev. Colon had a prolific career that involved him in many different ministries. Not only did he serve as pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in the Bronx for forty years, he also served as a chaplain in the Police Department from 1988 to 1999, as well as pastor of Grace Methodist Church in Manhattan, and was a visiting chaplain for State and City prisons.
Sadly, on May 5, 2000, Rev. Colon passed away.
Therefore, in recognition of his many years of service to his church and to communities across the City, it is fitting that Woodycrest Avenue, between West 167th and West 168th Streets, be named "Rev. Ruben Dario Colon Way."
For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
