The last bill before me, Introductory Number 814, sponsored by Council Members Lasher, Nelson and Golden, would add the name "Pat Mazzoli Way" to Avenue U, between Van Sicklen and West 5th Streets, in Brooklyn.
Pat Mazzoli was born on November 11, 1928 in Gravesend, Brooklyn. A lifelong Brooklynite, Pat never moved more than one block from his birthplace. Throughout his many years in the community, Pat served his neighbors in various capacities. He was president of the Gravesend Chamber of Commerce and founded the Minute Men on Avenue U, a group dedicated to protecting local merchants. In addition, he started the Shorefront Volunteer Ambulance Service and the Gravesend Museum at Public School 95. A great patriot and representative of his borough, Pat drove a covered wagon from Avenue U to Valley Forge as part of the nation's bicentennial celebration in 1976.
Unfortunately, Pat Mazzoli passed away on December 19, 1999.
Therefore, in recognition of his years of community service, it is fitting that Avenue U, between Van Sicklen and West 5th Streets, be named "Pat Mazzoli Way."
For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
