The next bill before me, Introductory Number 895, sponsored by Council Members Koslowitz, Marshall and Sabini, would add the name "Joe Queen Corner" to the southwest corner of 80th Road and Kew Gardens Road, in Queens.
A lifelong Queens resident, Joe Queen was born in 1963. After attending the Bronx High School of Science and New York University, Joe began a career in journalism at the Queens Tribune in the late 1970s. He later moved on to Newsday, where, for eight years, he penned a column exclusively about Queens. Joe reported on a wide array of topics, from Queens politics to offbeat stories about life in the borough's diverse neighborhoods. Joe's work was well-respected and he was twice honored with the Pulitzer Prize.
Sadly, Joe Queen lost a battle with cancer on Christmas morning, 1996. He was only 33 years old.
Due to the many contributions Joe Queen made to journalism and to his home borough, it is fitting that we name the corner next to Newsday's offices in his honor. Therefore, I am pleased to name the southwest corner of 80th Road and Kew Gardens Road "Joe Queen Corner."
For the reasons previously
stated, I will now sign the bill.
