MAYOR GIULIANI, SPEAKER VALLONE, AND QUEENS BOROUGH PRESIDENT SHULMAN
PLACE FRIENDLY WAGER ON YANKEES/METS SUBWAY SERIES

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today challenged City Council Speaker Peter F. Vallone and Queens Borough President Claire Shulman to a friendly wager on the outcome of this weekend's subway series between their respective favorite baseball teams - the New York Yankees and the New York Mets. The teams will face off against one another in the first of a three game series tonight at Shea Stadium. The terms of the wager are as follows

Should the Yankees lose, Mayor Giuliani will:

  • Fly the Mets banner over City Hall.
  • · Give the Speaker two live jumbo lobsters and seafood from the Lobster Box - the famed seafood restaurant located at 34 City Island Avenue in the Bronx.

"This weekend, subway series fever will grip New York once again as the City is captivated by the Bronx-Queens showdown," Mayor Giuliani said. "Although Peter Vallone, Claire Shulman and I will be rooting for different teams, when it comes to the Mets and Yankees, the entire City can cheer on the two New York teams that made the 2000 World Series a truly memorable subway series."

Should the Mets lose, Speaker Vallone will:

  • Fly the Yankees banner over City Hall.
  • Give the Mayor "The Catch of the Day" and a seafood platter from the renowned Taverna Vraka, located at 2315 31st Street in Astoria, Queens.
  • Speaker Vallone said, "As long as there is nothing fishy about the game, the Mets are going to win this subway series."

Should the Mets lose, Borough President Shulman will:

  • Fly the Yankees banner over Queens Borough Hall.

Borough President Shulman said, "I'm sick of betting on food - I'm getting too fat. Let's go Mets!"
